Maritime warning system

Design of a web interface help manage the creation and sending of emergency messages via two different satellite APIs.

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand manages maritime search and rescue operations across New Zealand’s expansive maritime zone. To facilitate these critical missions, they disseminate Maritime Safety Information (MSI) through two distinct satellite networks: Inmarsat and Iridium. Currently, the team needs to manually input messaging across two old, slow, and quirky web interfaces.

Previously, to ensure messages were accurate and consistently broadcast across both satellite platforms, a slow and manual process was required. My task was to design a web interface where a single message could be broadcast across both platforms simultaneously. Our goal was to speed up the existing process and make it less error-prone. We worked closely with their team, navigating the limitations of old satellite APIs. The result is a concise platform that automates where sensible but also allows users to manage the peculiarities of the systems and adjust to the dynamic nature of maritime safety.
